I have worked with many clients in the NHS, Olympic & Paralympic squads, professional golf, pro football, elite university sports, pro cycling, creative industries & public sector organisations.

Aim:

Performing under pressure is inevitable or a certainty for every athlete or sports person. But how we perceive the experience of pressure, is what determines our performance. We can choose how to think about pressure, but this depends on our level of Self-Belief, which is an essential ingredient when navigating demanding situations.

The programme integrates Cognitive Behavioural skills and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Training/Therapy (MBCT), with the aim of strengthening and maintaining higher levels of Self-Belief.

What's Needed & Adaptation:

The programme will train performers in how to establish, strengthen and maintain higher levels of Self-Belief through learning and practicing skills related to focus, attention, awareness, attitude, action, and cognition (especially self-appraisal). Training Self-Belief requires effort, careful planning, persistence, choosing the right strategies and learning how to deal with obstacles.

Higher levels of Self-Belief enable the athlete to view pressure in a competitive situation as a challenge or opportunity, maximising performance potential, learning and adaptation.

Self-Belief is a trainable skill!

Background:

This high performance programme integrates specific Cognitive Behavioural skills and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy for the sports person. The programme has been trialled and studied at two leading UK universities (Sport, Exercise & Health Sciences Department) with positive outcomes. The innovation was originally inspired by Dr Bob Rotella's approach to the psychological skills of the golfer and George Mumford (Mindful Athlete) and Phil Jackson's (Head Coach) work with Michael Jordan, and the Chicago Bulls.

Delivery & Structure:

The programme is offered in-person or via Zoom on a 1-1 or team basis. The programme is flexible in terms of session frequency and by approximately 6-8 sessions the client may begin to apply their own teacher/coach based mental skills-to maintain, balance and strengthen their Self-Belief in high pressure situations.
