Developing the Young Footballer

In this webinar Dr Joseph Dixon shares his experiences of working as a performance psychologist in professional football. Drawing on his time operating in Academy and First Team football in England’s top two divisions, he discusses his approach to working with young players and helping them develop. He also discusses his work as a sport psychologist and how he works with coaches, and staff to help young players develop. In addition to outlining his approach to helping young players develop Joe provides insights and tips for current and aspiring sport psychology practitioners.  


Dr Joseph Dixon

Dr Joseph Dixon is a dual-chartered Sport & Exercise and Occupational Psychologist with the British Psychological Society and, is a registered Practitioner Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council. During his time working within commercial organisations he specialised in leadership development and assessment, consulting with teams and leaders across a broad variety of industries on a global basis. Whilst working in business he pursued his passion for sport and undertook further training to become a Sport Psychologist. Since then, he has worked with a range of elite athletes and teams from a variety of different sports. From 2013 he has been the Club Psychologist with Stoke City Football Club in the English Premier League and Championship Division whilst completing a PhD focusing on challenge and threat states in athletes. He has published his research in peer-reviewed journals and was lead editor of the textbook, The Psychology of Soccer published in 2020. In 2019 he joined Bath Rugby Club in the English Premiership and now combines this role with his position at Stoke City FC. He also works with a number of different sporting and commercial clients through his business, Joseph Dixon Psychology Ltd.
