The Rational Practitioner: Using Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) With Athletes and Coaches

High-level sport can be a results-driven and ego-oriented climate for athletes, which can inspire many dysfunctional and distorted beliefs, cognitions, emotions, and behaviours, that often require psychological intervention. One prominent approach to psychological counselling that is growing in sport is Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT). REBT is a cognitive behavioural approach to consultancy, offering a pragmatic and structured method of helping athletes overcome unhelpful emotional and behavioural reactions to pressure and adversity. This workshop, delivered by a BPS Chartered, HCPC Registered and REBT-qualified Sport and Exercise Psychologist, introduces the theory and application of REBT with athletes. The workshop will define and explore irrational and rational beliefs, developing delegates’ understanding of REBT theory. Also, the applied considerations required for the use of REBT in sport will be covered. Delegates will leave with practical ideas of how REBT is applied in sport and performance settings. Previous knowledge of REBT is not needed for this workshop.
