How Do I Stick To My Plans in Sport

How Do I Stick To My Plans in Sport

We are all familiar with beginning things and not finishing them. It might be a diet, fitness regime, writing a book or learning the piano. At the outset we were invested in the activity but after a while we got side tracked for one reason or another.

Why Do People Not Stick to the Plan?

There are many reasons why some people may fail to stick to plans, even when they have the best intentions. Here are a few common reasons:

  • Lack of motivation: People who lack motivation or a strong sense of purpose may struggle to stick to plans, especially if they involve difficult or unpleasant tasks.
  • Lack of accountability: People who don't have anyone to hold them accountable for their actions may be more likely to abandon their plans or procrastinate.
  • Unrealistic expectations: Setting unrealistic goals or expectations can make it difficult to stick to plans, especially if progress is slow or setbacks occur.
  • Lack of planning: Failing to plan for potential obstacles or challenges can make it harder to stick to plans, as unexpected issues can derail progress.
  • Lack of self-discipline: People who struggle with self-discipline may find it hard to stick to plans, as they may struggle with impulse control or procrastination.
  • Lack of flexibility: Being too rigid or inflexible in plans can make it difficult to adjust to changes in circumstances, which can lead to frustration and giving up on the plan altogether.
  • Lack of support: Lack of support from friends, family, or colleagues can make it harder to stick to plans, especially if others don't understand or support the goals or actions being taken.

It's important to identify the reasons why you may struggle to stick to plans and address them to improve your chances of success. This might involve seeking support from others, breaking goals down into smaller, more achievable steps, or adjusting expectations and plans to be more realistic and flexible.

How Can You Stick to a Plan?

One effective strategy to help people stick to a plan is to use the power of social support and accountability. Research has shown that people who have support from others and who are held accountable for their actions are more likely to stick to their plans and achieve their goals.

Here are the steps for using social support and accountability to help stick to a plan:

  • Identify your support system: Think about the people in your life who are supportive of your goals and who can offer encouragement, motivation, and advice. This might include friends, family members, coworkers, or a support group.
  • Share your plan with your support system: Once you've identified your support system, share your plan with them. This can help to build excitement and momentum around your goal, and also provides an opportunity for feedback and suggestions.
  • Ask for accountability: Ask your support system to hold you accountable for your actions. This might involve setting up regular check-ins or progress updates, or agreeing on consequences if you don't follow through with your plan.
  • Stay connected: Stay in touch with your support system throughout the process. This might involve sharing updates on your progress, asking for advice or encouragement when you're struggling, or celebrating your successes together.
  • By using social support and accountability, you can create a network of people who are invested in your success and who can help you stay on track when you're feeling unmotivated or distracted. This strategy can be particularly effective for long-term goals or habits that require sustained effort and commitment.

It's important to choose your support system carefully and to be clear about your expectations for accountability. You want to find people who are supportive, encouraging, and non-judgmental, but who are also willing to hold you accountable and help you stay on track. By working together, you can increase your chances of staying motivated, sticking to your plan and reaching your goals.
