Mental Fitness - Mental Health at the Heart of Performance
The National charity Mind have reported that nearly three quarters (73%) of students said their mental health declined during the lockdown. Before the pandemic the number of young people struggling with their mental health was already on the rise, sadly the pandemic has excasberated the challenge.Yet, there’s so much that can be done. It’s not the lockdown or the pandemic that causes mental health issues, it’s the lack of understanding of how to adapt. This is exactly why I created Mental Fitness for Sports Students, Academy Footballers, Elite Youth Athletes and Student-Athletes with elite4all. Since both businesses have started we have delivered coaching to over 600 young people. Every time we deliver our coaching, I am taken back by how demotivated the young people are (generally speaking) when they come into the room, for as they typically say, “not another mental health workshop”. Thankfully our coaching isn’t just another awareness session. Our young people are tired of awareness sessions. They want solutions! They want us to stop telling them what they are experiencing and saying it’s ok to not be ok. They get it! What they want is a way forward, solutions that empower them to take back control of their mental health. In reality, that’s what we all want. This is exactly what our coaching programmes offer... the knowledge and skills for how to take back control of your mental health and then use it to achieve what you want to achieve. Mental health is a matter of mental fitness and flexibility. Once the young people know how, well then they will show you how to live.
