The Psychology of Performance in Extreme Environments

In this session, I'll share some of our ongoing research around monitoring and supporting personnel in extreme environments. I’ll talk about the processes we recently followed to develop a new digital technology for the management of performance and health in high-risk operational settings, findings from a measurement development and validation project we are collaborating on with NASA, and an innovative behavioural study of psychosocial function in remote operational personnel with the European Space Agency’s Advanced Concepts Team (ACT). The session will finish with reflections on how this work might be applied in other high performance settings.

Dr Nathan Smith

Dr Nathan Smith is an Associate Professor at Coventry University. HIs work is primarily focused on issues related to human behaviour, performance and health under conditions of extreme stress. He currently leads a programme of work that draws upon contemporary psychological, behavioural and data science theories and methods to understand, and, through the development of innovative tools and technologies, augment the performance and psychological health of personnel in extreme situations and settings. He has been funded and supported by the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD), Centre for Research and Evidence on Security Threats (CREST), European Space Agency (ESA), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). Prior to joining the University of Manchester, Nathan was a Senior Research Scientist at the MOD’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl). He continues to provide consultancy services around risk, resilience and performance to various military, security and police departments, as well as others providing training for remote fieldworkers and travellers.
